A Kentucky woman named Phoebe Copas (48) was arrested and charged with murder after shooting an Uber driver named Daniel Piedra Garcia (52), believing he would kidnap her to Mexico. The tragic incident occurred last Friday when Copas traveled to El Paso, Texas, from Tompkinsville, Kentucky, to visit her boyfriend. Upon making plans to meet her boyfriend at a local casino following his work shift, Copas summoned an Uber ride, and Garcia answered the request. After being picked up by Garcia, Copas grew anxious when she spotted a U.S. 54 exit sign that read Fort Bliss and Juarez, Mexico. In response, she withdrew her gun and shot her driver in the back of the head. However, when law enforcement arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, they did find any indications that her suspicions were justified.
“At some point during the drive, Copas thought she was being taken into Mexico and shot Piedra,” stated the police. “The investigation does not support that a kidnapping took place or that Piedra was veering from Copas’ destination.”
On Wednesday, Garcia's family made the decision to take him off of life support.
“I miss him, and I wish this wouldn’t have happened to him,” said Garcia's niece Didi Lopez. “He didn’t deserve that. No one deserves that...It's hard. We still had hope that maybe he would be OK and wake up, so now we just have to decide what our next step is."
Garcia's family has set up a GoFundMe for help with the funeral, wake, and supporting events. Uber has also contacted the family, stating they will help however possible.
