In 2008 U.S Army Veteran, Derek Harris offered an officer .69 gram of marijuana.
On August 8, 2020, Black Military Veteran, Derek Harris' lawyer confirmed with sources that Harris is set to be liberated. This is just a month after The Louisiana Supreme Court granted Derek Harris a hearing, where prosecutors consented to release him, after serving nine years.
In 2008 when U.S Veteran offered a cop $30 worth of weed, he was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison but due to the Louisiana Habitual Offender's law, he was sentenced to life in 2012. The law permits judges to give harsher sentences for recurrent offenders.
According to Derek Harris' lawyer, the District Attorney has admitted that Harris "received ineffective assistance at sentencing and was entitled to a lesser sentence." Louisiana Supreme Court Justice John Weimer agrees that “His prior offenses were nonviolent and related to his untreated dependency on drugs."
An exact released date has not yet been announced.
