Atlanta restaurant Umi Sushi is being accused of discriminating against a Black man after he was escorted out for wearing a pair of white Air Force 1s. The restaurant has a strict dress code that forbids caps, sneakers, flip-flops, athletic wear, and tanks tops. However, a White woman is seen sitting at the bar wearing a pair of silver Adidas.
During the exchange between the man and the restaurant's employees, he questioned why he was being targeted when he wasn't the only one wearing sneakers inside of the establishment. As his wife filmed the incident, the customer stated, "This is pure racism, she has on Adidas."
The staff member denied the accusation despite his failure to provide a reasonable explanation to the man. Once the conversation moved outside, the owner (who is also wearing sneakers) was seen exiting the restaurant when the couple attempted to get him involved. But the owner, identified as Farshid Arshid, dismissed the couple's concerns which led to a heated exchange.
After footage of the incident spread across social media, the restaurant began to trend and caused the owner to make a statement.
"This was completely, 100%, an operational mistake on our end," Arshid said in a statement. "When they got upset we should have investigated that."
Arshid added he has contacted the couple to work things out.
