Keierra McNeil had always beat the odds. One of six children, the Memphis woman had gotten pregnant and was looking forward to a family of her own family.
Her relationship with the unborn child’s father had become turbulent. To hash things out, McNeil agreed to meet Kevin Mckinney at a local Walgreens about 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2020, according to a local news report.
In interviews, Memphis police said that they were told that McKinney didn’t want McNeil to have the child and was pressuring her to have an abortion.
McNeil’s family reportedly told her not to meet with McKinney because of the way he had been acting. But McNeil thought that working out a co-parenting arrangement would be the right thing to do.
At least one witness said that while McNeil was waiting inside her black Mercedes at Walgreens a man came out of the bushes and walked up behind the vehicle and began shooting.
During their investigation, police discovered multiple calls from McKinney on McNeil’s cell phone right before her murder.
Also, the description of the gunman matched McKinney, a witness told authorities.
McKinney, 38, was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder.
McNeil’s father said his daughter had already been through so much.
“When she was first born she was a premature baby,” he told TV station Fox 13. “She made it through that became successful, and then for someone to take her life like that, it hurt me, it hurt me.”
