An orphan who lost both his parents and overcame a troubled upbringing to win a university scholarship murdered his classmate according to Montgomery police.

Ivry Hall, 20, has been charged with shooting Adam Dowdell Jr, 22, less than a week after Dowdell was found dead at Alabama State University in Montgomery, reports Metro.

The motive for the killing is unclear.

Hall lost his mother to cancer when he was 12 and his father to alcoholism when he was 17.

He fell in with a gang but managed to get himself back on the right track against the odds.

Hall graduated top of his high school class in 2018, and moved from his home city in Chicago to Montgomery to begin a Degree in Business Studies.

He secured a place after spending 2-hours a day commuting on three buses and one train each day to get to high school to complete his studies.

However, Hall’s bright future has been left in tatters after Dowdell’s murder.

He turned himself into the authorities on Friday and he is being held without bail.
