According to reports, Eric Garner’s mother has won a bid for an investigation into the NYPD’s arrest of her son that resulted in his death.
New York Supreme Court Judge Joan Madden gave more detail in her decision on the Garner case last Thursday, saying: “Although the arrest and death of Eric Garner has received considerable attention in the press over the past six years, many facts relating to his arrest and death, and the investigations and any disciplinary actions taken in response to his death, have not been disclosed to the public or to the family of Mr. Garner.”
Garner’s mother—Gwen Carr wanted the ability to be able to question officials on the death of her son. Some of those officials include former NY Police Commissioner James O’Neill, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, and others. The inquiry by Carr was into possible violations and “neglect of duties” related to the death of Eric Garner.
The officer seen on camera choking Garner—Daniel Pantaleo was fired after the incident but never hit with any criminal charge for the death. The inquiry also wants to ask about failing to train NYPD officers on chokehold protocols and possible violations on “false official NYPD documents.”
