A mother has been accused of manslaughter after she left her 20-month-old daughter home alone for six days.
Verphy Kudi, 18, who is said to have a history of mental health problems and running away from home, left her daughter Asiah alone at their apartment in Brighton, East Sussex, in December last year.
According to prosecutors, CCTV footage shows Kudi leaving her apartment in Islingword Road, Brighton on 5 December 2019, her 18th birthday and returning on 11 December.
Baby Asiah died while she was away.
The baby was rushed to Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton but was tragically pronounced dead on arrival.
A postmortem and subsequent further forensic tests found baby Asiah died from neglect, according to reports.
Kudi appeared via videolink, wrapping herself in a grey blanket and crying as the charge was read out.
Kudi was remanded in custody until 16 November, when she will appear at Lewes Crown Court.
A statement from Sussex Police said: “A mother has been charged with causing the death of her daughter in Brighton.
