Comedian Mo’Nique is demanding a public apology from film producer Tyler Perry in the same way that Will Smith apologised to his former ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ co-star, Janet Hubert.
Hubert, 64, played Aunt Viv on the first 3 seasons of the sitcom but left in 1993, which set off a decades long feud with Will and the end of her career.
In a new Red Table Talk with clinical psychologist Ramani Durvasula, Smith and Hubert ended their almost 30-year feud.
Hubert tells Smith: ‘I lost everything. Reputation, everything. Everything’.
‘And I understand you were able to move forward, but you know those words’.
‘Calling a black woman “difficult” in Hollywood is the kiss of death.’
She went on: ‘It’s the kiss of death, and it’s hard enough being a dark-skinned black woman in this business’.
‘But I felt it was necessary for us to finally move forward’.
‘And I’m sorry that I have blasted you to pieces,’ she added .
Smith said: ‘I could not do a 30-year celebration of this show and not celebrate you, celebrate your contribution to the show, celebrate your contribution to my life’.
‘I didn’t come here to have animosity. I came here to resolve ’cause it’s time,’ she said in a confessional, calling her conversation with Will ‘healing’.
Mo’Nique took to Instagram with the clip of Smith and Hubert and wrote,
"Hats off to Will Smith for apologizing for what he did to Janet Huberts (everybody’s Aunt Viv) career/life when he was young. Perhaps Tyler Perry, who has admitted in private that he was wrong will follow suit & be man enough to apologize in public like he promised. We’ll work on Oprah & Lions Gate a little later. P.S. Tyler you won E! PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD for being the peoples champ for your body of work. Tell the truth about a women named Mo’Nique who did nothing wrong & be a champion for the individuals who supported your career for years….THE BLACK WOMEN."
Mo’Nique has claimed in various interviews that she was ‘Blackballed’ by Oprah Winfrey, Lee Daniels and Tyler Perry.
