Hulu has apologized for promoting docuseries "The New York Times Presents: The Killing of Breonna Taylor" just a few hours after a Kentucky grand jury cleared the police officers involved in her death. The Disney-owned streaming service deleted a tweet about the docuseries and thanked Twitter users for “holding us accountable” for the misstep. “We will learn from this,” promised Hulu’s official Twitter account.
On Wednesday afternoon, more than six months after three police officers fired into Taylor’s apartment in a “no-knock” raid, a grand jury returned a verdict of three counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree against former Louisville Metro Police Department officer Brett Hankison for shooting his gun into an apartment next to Taylor’s. None of the other officers in the raid were charged, a decision that ignited protests across the country as citizens demanded justice.
Less than two hours after Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron held a press conference to announce the verdict, Hulu released a tweet promoting “The Killing of Breonna Taylor,” the third episode of its "New York Times Presents" docuseries. “Breonna Taylor’s life was changing. The police came to her door,” the tweet read. “#NYTPresents: The Killing of Breonna Taylor traces the missteps of the deadly raid #FXonHulu.”
Twitter users were quick to screenshot the tweet, and they slammed Hulu for taking “advantage of her name trending and HER STORY for YOUR Ratings.” Others pointed out that “The Killing of Breonna Taylor” is prominently featured on Hulu’s homepage (as of press time, the docuseries remains at the top of the page with a note urging users to “watch the special presentation.”)
