A man on an Allegiant Airlines flight from Mesa, AZ to Provo, UT thought wearing a face shield was enough COVID-19 precaution. However, after being approached to put on a mask to cover his nose and mouth, the man refused. What happened after became the latest COVID-related brawl to go viral.
The fight broke out after the flight crew attempted to escort the man who refused to wear a mask off the plane. The man at the center of the controversy was identified as Rio James Honaker, 52 of American Fork, Utah. He was described as being “confrontational with a flight attendant when asked multiple times to put a mask on.” Honaker faces a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.
“While the passenger was being escorted off the plane, he had an altercation with another passenger. Law enforcement was called to assist,” said Allegiant Airlines in a statement. The airline added that their mask policy requires “a solid material, fully cover the mouth and nose, fit snugly against the face, and be secured under the chin.”
