Tesla CEO Elon Musk is on track to surpass Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to become the world’s third-richest person.
This comes amid news of Tesla’s shares jumped 13% following its selection to join the S&P 500 index of leading US companies. The latest jump in shares has increased Musk’s fortune by about $15 billion to about $117.5 billion. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, 36-year-old Zuckerberg is worth $106 billion. Ahead of Musk and Zuckerberg is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos with $184 billion, and Microsoft CEO Bill Gates with $129 billion.
Musk has signed Bill Gates and Warren Buffett's The Giving Pledge, where he committed to giving away at least half of his wealth to charity. Forbes estimates that so far, he has given about $100 million to charitable causes.
